Buying
jewelry from individuals.
No, we don't buy from individuals who may have inherited or
otherwise obtained Native American Jewelry unless we can actually
see the jewelry. We can't buy from photos.
We buy only from known and
trusted Indian sources, or reputable Indian Traders who we've dealt with
for years, unless we can actually see the jewelry in person. There
is a lot of "Indian Jewelry" made in third world countries, and we have to
be careful. Sorry!!
In addition, most people who have been blessed with becoming the owner of Indian Jewelry have the impression that their jewerly is unique, and therefore very valuable. Well, chances are, it is unique. And, chances are, it is valuable. But, the chances also are that it's no more unique, or no more valuable than similar items seen here on our web site. If you are wanting to sell us some Indian jewelry, a photo will do no good. Just mail the jewelry to us, with a note of how much you are asking for it. We will either buy it, make a counter offer, or send it back. Yep, this requires some trust on your part, but we did not build our business on theft. We, if we determine the jewelry is genuine Indian made jewelry, may make an offer based on what we would expect to pay for similar items purchased wholesale. We will not, cannot, and there is no point in expecting us to pay retail for the items. If you send it, send it to this address - this is where our buyers are: Ugly Otter Trading Post, 1188 Court St #50, Elko, Nevada 89801.
We are not appraisers. We are not qualified, and, even if we were, we would have to have the items being appraised here, in our office, to make any kind of judgment concerning it's worth. It will do you no good to call or e-mail us describing something you have inherited or are otherwise curious about. We cannot make any kind of valuation guesses based on phone conversations, photographs, or e-mails. Please don't ask us to do this - we can't. If we could do this, we would gladly do so. In addition, we do not know of anyone who will do this - if we did know of someone, we would gladly tell you.
The only advice we can give on this subject, is to literally take the item(s) to Gallup, NM, or to Albuquerque, NM, or to Santa Fe, NM, or some other town on or near the Navajo or Zuni Reservations and there you can find dozens of places that probably will help you. But, they will not do this by phone, or with photos. If you can't take it there, I don't know what else to tell you. I wish there was some way we could help. We would like to do so, but if we can't, we can't - it's that simple.
You are welcome to go thru our web site to see if you can find something like, or similar to, the items you are trying to find a value on. This may give you some idea of the worth of your item - but other than this, we have no suggestions.
Buying rough turquoise or other stones.
We do not make jewelry - we buy it already made. We are traders, not manufacturers. We have no shop. We have no need for rough or un-mounted stones. If you have some good material you are trying to sell, we just can't use it. Some silversmith or shop which actually makes Indian Jewelry is your best place to sell rough stones, and these are located mainly in Northern Arizona and Northern New Mexico. If you are passing thru that area, you might want to show your material to someone who makes Indian jewelry, or to a pawn shop in the area.
